The art of travelling well can be the difference between a great holiday and a disastrous one. And what you pack in your luggage is often one of the most stressful – and important – elements of travelling, particularly if you want to do it well.
Whether you’re aiming to keep your luggage weight down or just trying to simplify the pack and travel experience, there are a few essentials that, in my experience, should always find their way into your bag, no matter how small it is.

Eye mask – whether it’s for some shut eye on a plane or for a hotel room without blackout blinds. A good eye mask helps for restful rest so you can work hard, play hard or both. Make sure it fits you well, and if you use ear buds, aim to get a mask that keeps them in your ears.

Loofah. Air travel in particular is so drying and if you’re relying on hotel skincare products (to minimise your packing) it’s even worse. A loofah brush or mitt for a quick brush over not only is a skin saviour but promotes circulation as well.

Face mask. See above. I love Frank’s “depuffs puffy face” from Mecca, Kit: also have some great products, but the ultimate has to be Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream. I slather it on every hour or so when I fly, particularly on a long haul flight.

Umbrella and sunscreen. Portable umbrella for rainy days can be the difference between a misery and a delight when showers coincide with your travel plans. Sunscreen in any weather is always essential. If it’s hot or sunny, pack something you can top up on the go. I love Naked Sunday for their Collagen Glow primer, and have recently started using their Serum Drops. Gorgeous.

Wrap, scarf or shawl. Planes and hotels can be cold, weather can change to chilly or unexpectedly sunny and a versatile wrap in a neutral shade, or that complements your travel wardrobe, is ideal for warming you up or protecting your skin. Easily transportable, effortlessly chic and smart girl practical.

Maybe your “top 5” essentials differ to mine – that’s all good! The ultimate packing tip is to make a list. Your essentials will always be at the top, and ticking items off as they find their way into your suitcase will reduce your stress, ensure you’re organised so you can dive into your trip as the well heeled traveller you ought to be!
