Don’t you just love Prince? So said Julie Roberts in “Pretty Woman” back in the 80s as she sank into a bubble bath with her Walkman headphones on…
Well I still love Prince, God rest his fabulous soul and on a recent drive home after a long and intense day, I was totally mood lifted thanks to these 5 tunes.
1. “Kiss” – this is the aforementioned song that had Julie Roberts vibing in the bath. Whilst the original from Tom Jones is uplifting in its own right, there’s something irresistible about the way Prince does it. I dare you not to shake your tailfeather or do a little car boogey when it comes on!
2. “Get off”. The lyrics to this song are bangers. It’s grindy and sexy but also respectful…. “I’ll only call you after if you say I can”. It’s so raunchy it’s embarrassing to sing along in front of your parents, but gee it’s one of those songs that can make anyone feel like getting a little bit intimate, or at least remembering times when they did!
Side note: I could have easily substituted the equally sensual “Cream” here..
3. “1999”. Who doesn’t want to party like its the turn of the century? Whether this invokes memories of your 21st century new year’s eve party, or the beat just creeps up on you and puts a little spring in your step, this is a great go-to for an uplift and is always on my annual girls’ long lunch playlist.
4. “Musicology.” I remember when this song came out I was simply stunned at Prince’s inimitable talent. This song just makes you want to get up and dance like no one’s watching. Like most Prince songs, it’s made mostly for the ladies, in celebration of their beauty and sensuality.
5. “Raspberry Beret”. Only just beating “Alphabet Street” and “Little Red Corvette”, this neat little ditty tells a great story and somehow makes into your fingers so you’ve just got to start snapping them in time with the music. Another tribute to the power of a woman to turn heads, even with just a little rouge coloured headpiece, this is an oldy but a goody.
I’m saying that even if you’re not a Prince fan (or have never heard of him!), if you’ve had a tough day and queue these on your Spotify or You Tube you’ll be swept up, shaking your booty, the edges of your mouths upturned into a knowing smile, clicking fingers and singing along in no time.
Mood improved!
You’re welcome.
